Buying a harp is an exciting time. Obviously it’s a big decision as it’s, of course, an investment. Ideally, if you can try out your harp before you buy it, I would highly recommend this.

And I would also recommend going for a quality instrument as opposed to something you think looks pretty.

Things to consider before you buy are:

-String tension - I like higher tension strings but some harpers may prefer lighter tension, especially if they have issues like arthritis

-Type of wood used (best to stay away from laminate/plywood unless it’s a particularly small harp)

-Weight and dimensions - lightweight harps with smaller frames are more travel-friendly

-Amount of strings (I think anywhere from 26 and up is good, my harp is 34 strings and this allows you to play a nice amount of bass)

-Levers - some harps have no levers. Some have just F and C levers. Some have all the levers. I would recommend getting all the levers, if you can. Although, if you’re a beginner and your budget is tight, you might consider getting just F and C levers.

-Practicality of design - some have handy detachable legs, some have straps that go over your shoulder

-*Sound quality - this is the big one, it has to sound like magic to you

-A bag to carry your harp in - does the maker provide these?

These are just a few points that come to mind.
